Expected Program Reach

Adopting and merging the Dettol Hygiene Quest Curriculum to WBFA’s Programmes

The current Hygiene Quest Curriculum Hygiene and Me is an engaging, story-driven teaching curriculum that helps to embed strong, lasting hygiene practices in children aged six to eight. Hygiene Quest teaches children how to prevent the spread of germs through good personal hygiene habits and behaviours. The curriculum is made up of four modules, each focussing on a different key aspect of hygiene. Topics 1) Unseen world which focuses on germs that cause illnesses and Topic 2) The power of clean hands each have 3 or 4 different lessons focused on hand washing. Lessons are taught using cartoons (available in both animation and comic book formats), questionnaires and handouts.

In comparison, WBFA currently uses the PSHE WASH curriculum for its WASH in School and Communities programs. In addition, for the Mamacare Program, WASH classes are taught using the ‘Mother and Baby Handbook'. They focus on the practical picture-based instructions and in class demonstration interactions of the 11 Steps of Handwashing as recommended by the WHO. The classes also focus on preventing the spread of germs through good personal hygiene habits and behaviours. PSHE WASH curriculum.

Merging Hygiene Quest into PSHE WASH curriculum

WBFA believes that the current HQ curriculum, topics and lessons are feasible for the primary school age groups and Junior secondary school children, therefore it will be used for school children aged 8- 12 years old. Therefore, the Dettol Hygiene Quest curriculum will be adopted into the existing PSHE WASH curriculum for WASH in Schools program .

WBFA’s PSHE WASH in school and WASH at community programs will be carried out by Nurses, but unlike Reckitt’s HQ program, the nurses will not have constant interaction with students like school teachers. Therefore, the tools that WBFA uses for this collaborative project will be adjusted to suit WBFA’s program structures.

Merging Hygiene Quest into WBFA’s Mother and Baby Handbook

Currently, WBFA’s Mamacare classes use the Mother Baby Hand Book to conduct its classes for pregnant women and mothers. The topics covered are specifically suited for mothers thus focusing on maternal preparedness and postnatal topics which also include best WASH practices to prevent infections and illnesses for mother and baby.

The current Dettol Hygiene Quest Curriculum ‘Hygiene and Me’  is specifically designed for school environments involving interaction between teachers and students; therefore, specific integration/adjustment would be implemented in order utilise it in Mamacare Classes. Nevertheless, the  Dettol Hygiene Quest Curriculum ‘Hygiene and Me curriculum contain fundamental topics that cover best practices for maintaining clean hands and avoiding/preventing infections, The practices are universal and are also taught in the MamaCare classes. Therefore the current Mamacare Hand Book can expand its section on Hand Washing using the Dettol Hygiene Quest curriculum with messages recreated and streamlined to suit mothers, non-school audience and other community members so that it is easily understood by those taking classes.

Local Language Translations

For effective messaging on promoting awareness and best practices of hand washing, communication materials would be translated into the major languages of Lagos, Kwara and Abuja such as Hausa and Yoruba.
